What the Split PDF does
Split PDF takes pages out of a PDF document. You can extract exactly the pages you need into a new, smaller PDF — for example pages 1–3 and 7 of a contract — or split the whole document so that every page becomes its own file. The page count is shown as soon as you open the file, so you know which numbers are valid.
Page ranges are flexible: “1-3, 5, 8-” takes pages 1 to 3, page 5 and everything from page 8 to the end, and the pages are saved in the order you type them, so you can also use the tool to reorder pages or reverse a document (for example “10-1”). The extracted pages are copied unchanged, keeping text searchable and images sharp.
The file is processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded, which matters for documents such as payslips, contracts or medical records.
When to use it
Sending only what is needed
Share the signed page of a contract or the relevant pages of a report instead of the whole document.
Upload limits
Portals often limit file size; extracting the required pages makes the file much smaller.
Scans with many documents
Split a single scan of several letters into one PDF per page and file them separately.
Reordering pages
Write the pages in a new order, such as “2, 1, 3-”, to rearrange a PDF.
Tips for the best results
- Use “8-” to mean “from page 8 to the end” without having to know the last page number.
- When splitting every page, your browser may ask once whether it may download several files — allow it.
- Combine with Merge PDF to replace a page: extract the pages around it, then merge them with the new page.
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be split; remove the password first.
How the Split PDF works
The tool uses the open-source library pdf-lib (MIT licence), which is hosted on our own server and loaded only on PDF tool pages. It reads the structure of your PDF in memory and reports the number of pages.
For extraction, the page list you type is converted into page numbers and checked against the page count. A new PDF is created and the selected pages are copied into it together with the fonts and images they use. In “Every page as its own PDF” mode, this happens once per page and each file is downloaded with a numbered name such as report-03.pdf.
Because pages are copied rather than re-rendered, the output keeps the original quality, and file sizes stay proportional to the pages you keep.
