What the Lorem Ipsum Generator does

Lorem Ipsum is the standard placeholder text of the design and publishing world. It fills web pages, app screens, brochures and slides with text that looks like real writing, so you can judge fonts, line lengths and layout before the final copy is ready — without readers getting distracted by the meaning.

This generator creates as many paragraphs (up to 50), sentences (up to 500) or words (up to 5,000) as you need. You can start with the famous opening “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit” or get completely random text, and wrap each paragraph in HTML <p> tags to paste it straight into your code. Every click on “Generate new text” creates a fresh variation.

The text is generated in your browser from a list of classic Lorem Ipsum words. A word and character count helps you match the length of the real content you are designing for.

When to use it

  • Web and app design

Fill wireframes and mockups in Figma, Sketch or Adobe XD with realistic text blocks.

  • Website templates

Test WordPress themes, landing pages and blog layouts with paragraphs of different lengths.

  • Print and layout

Check columns, hyphenation and spacing in InDesign, Word or Canva before the copy arrives.

  • Development and testing

Create sample data for databases, forms and text fields with a specific number of words.

Tips for the best results

  • Match the length of the real text: a product description of 50 words looks very different from a 300-word article.
  • Replace placeholder text before you publish — search engines treat Lorem Ipsum as low-quality content.
  • Use the HTML option to paste ready-made paragraphs directly into a code editor or CMS.
  • Switch off the classic opening if many blocks on the same page would otherwise all start the same way.

How the Lorem Ipsum Generator works

The classic text goes back to a passage from Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC), which was shortened and altered by typesetters, probably in the 1500s. It became popular in the 1960s with Letraset sheets and later with desktop publishing software.

The generator builds sentences of 6 to 14 random words from a list of typical Lorem Ipsum vocabulary, capitalizes the first word, sometimes adds a comma and ends each sentence with a period. Paragraphs contain four to seven sentences.

Because the words are chosen randomly every time, each generated text is unique, while the rhythm of word and sentence lengths stays similar to real Latin prose.

Frequently asked questions

What does Lorem Ipsum mean?

It is scrambled Latin based on a text by Cicero from 45 BC. The words look like real language but have no meaning, so readers focus on the design rather than the content.

Can I use Lorem Ipsum commercially?

Yes. The text is not protected by copyright and can be used freely in any project.

Why not just use real text?

Real text makes reviewers read and comment on the wording. Neutral placeholder text keeps the focus on design and structure.

Is Lorem Ipsum real Latin?

Partly. It starts from real Latin by Cicero, but words were cut and changed, so it does not form meaningful sentences.
