About this tool

A slug is the readable part of a web address, like “/compress-image”. Paste one or many titles and get short, clean slugs without spaces, accents or special characters — ready for WordPress, Shopify or your own CMS.

  • Private: your data is processed on your device and never uploaded.
  • Free with no account, limits or watermarks.
  • Fast: results appear instantly, even offline once the page has loaded.

What the URL Slug Generator does

A slug is the part of a URL that identifies a page in words, such as “merge-pdf” in omid57.eu/en-US/tools/merge-pdf. Good slugs are short, readable and contain the main keyword, which helps visitors understand a link before they click it and gives search engines an extra relevance hint.

This generator turns any title into a clean slug: it converts letters to lowercase, removes accents (é → e, ñ → n), turns German umlauts into ae, oe and ue if you like, replaces “&” with the word “and” in your language, drops punctuation and joins the words with hyphens or underscores. You can remove common filler words, limit the length without cutting words in half, and convert many titles at once — one per line.

For Persian, Arabic, Russian and other scripts you can keep the original letters to create non-Latin slugs. Everything runs in your browser.

When to use it

  • Blog posts and articles

Create short, keyword-focused URLs instead of long, automatically generated ones.

  • Online shops

Generate consistent product and category URLs from product names in bulk.

  • Developers

Create IDs, file names, CSS class names or anchor links from human-readable text.

  • Migrations

Convert a list of page titles from an old site into slugs for the new structure.

Tips for the best results

  • Keep slugs to three to five words; you can drop words like “the”, “and” or “for” without losing meaning.
  • Avoid dates and numbers that will change, such as years in evergreen articles.
  • Once a page is published, keep its slug. If you must change it, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL.
  • Use hyphens rather than underscores — Google treats hyphens as spaces between words.

How the URL Slug Generator works

The text is first normalized with Unicode NFKD, which splits accented letters into a base letter and a separate accent mark; the accent marks are then removed. Special letters that do not decompose, such as ß, æ, ø and ł, are replaced by their usual Latin spelling.

Everything that is not a letter or digit becomes a word boundary. Apostrophes are removed first, so “don’t” becomes “dont” rather than “don-t”. With the filler-word option, common short words of your language are dropped, but never all words of a title.

When a maximum length is set, the slug is cut at the last separator before the limit, so words are never split.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good URL slug?

Short, lowercase, words separated by hyphens and containing the main keyword, for example “/merge-pdf” rather than “/page?id=123”.

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, while words joined with underscores may be read as one word.

How long should a slug be?

As short as possible while still describing the page — usually under 60 characters and three to five words.

Can I use non-Latin characters in URLs?

Yes, modern browsers display them, but they are percent-encoded when copied (for example %D8%A7). Latin slugs are shorter and easier to share.
