What the Tip Calculator does

At the end of a meal nobody wants to do mental arithmetic. This tip calculator works out the tip and the total for any bill and tells each person exactly what to pay when you split the check with friends, family or colleagues.

Tap one of the quick buttons for 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25 percent, or type any other rate. Enter how many people are sharing and the calculator divides the total evenly. If you prefer round numbers, turn on rounding: each share is rounded up to a whole amount and the tip grows a little to match.

The tool works on any phone, needs no app and no sign-up, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded. Amounts are formatted in the currency style of your region.

Tips for the best results

  • In the US, 15% is the usual minimum for table service, 18–20% is standard and 20%+ rewards great service.
  • If someone ordered much more than the others, splitting evenly may not be fair – calculate their part separately.
  • Rounding each share up is often easier with cash and leaves a slightly bigger tip.
  • Check the receipt for an included gratuity before adding a tip, especially in tourist areas and for groups of six or more.

How the Tip Calculator works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage and divided by 100, rounded to cents. The total is the bill plus the tip.

For several people, the total is divided by the number of people. With rounding turned on, each share is rounded up to the next whole amount, the total becomes share × people, and the tip is whatever is left above the bill.

The calculation happens instantly in your browser while you type. Nothing is stored or sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In US restaurants 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is usual, and 20% or more for great service. Customs differ a lot between countries, so check local practice when you travel.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill and divide the total by the number of people. The calculator does both steps and can round each share up.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Etiquette guides in the US usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount. Many people tip on the total for simplicity; enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

Often yes. If the bill already includes a service charge or gratuity, an extra tip is optional. Check the receipt, especially for large groups.

How do I calculate 20 percent quickly in my head?

Move the decimal point one place to the left to get 10% and double it. On a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.00.
