  3. Read the mean, median, mode and the other statistics.

About this tool

Paste or type a list of numbers, separated by commas, spaces or line breaks, and get the average and the most useful statistics at once. Handy for grades, prices, measurements and survey results.

  • Private: your data is processed on your device and never uploaded.
  • Free with no account, limits or watermarks.
  • Fast: results appear instantly, even offline once the page has loaded.

What the Average Calculator does

The average is the first number most people look for in a set of data: the average grade in a class, the average price of a product or the average time for a task. This average calculator gives you the mean together with the median and mode, so you see not only the typical value but also how the numbers are spread.

Just paste a list of numbers from a spreadsheet, a document or a website. Commas, spaces, tabs and line breaks all work as separators. If your numbers use a decimal comma, such as 2,5, separate them with semicolons or put each one on its own line.

Besides the mean, median and mode, the calculator shows the count, sum, minimum, maximum, range and both the sample and the population standard deviation. All calculations run in your browser and update instantly as you type.

When to use it

  • Grades and test scores

Find the average grade, the middle score and the spread of results in a class.

  • Prices and budgets

Calculate the average price of products, monthly expenses or quotes from different suppliers.

  • Science and lab work

Get the mean and standard deviation of repeated measurements in one step.

  • Surveys and sports

Summarize ratings, response times, lap times or scores quickly.

Tips for the best results

  • If the mean and median are far apart, your data is skewed or contains an outlier – check it before reporting the mean.
  • Copy a column straight from Excel or Google Sheets: each cell becomes one line and is read correctly.
  • For a weighted average, such as grades with different credit points, multiply each value by its weight first and divide by the sum of the weights.
  • Round the results only at the end; rounding each number first can change the average noticeably.

How the Average Calculator works

The mean is the sum of all numbers divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value after sorting; with an even count, it is the average of the two middle values.

The mode is the value that appears most often. The range is the maximum minus the minimum.

The standard deviation measures how far the numbers typically are from the mean. It is the square root of the average squared distance from the mean, dividing by n for the population and by n − 1 for a sample.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the average?

Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. The average of 12, 15, 9, 21 and 15 is 72 / 5 = 14.4.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted, so a single very large or small value moves it much less.

When should I use the median instead of the mean?

Use the median when your data has outliers or is skewed, for example incomes or house prices. One very large value can pull the mean up a lot but hardly moves the median.

What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?

Population standard deviation divides by the number of values n and is used when you have all the data. Sample standard deviation divides by n − 1 and is used when your numbers are a sample of a larger group.

What if there is no mode?

If every number appears the same number of times, there is no mode. If several numbers share the highest count, all of them are shown.
